Honestly, I hope Toyota tells Apple to stuff it.

Lame. You can be sure Toyota will capitulate to the Apple strong arm.

Not surprised! Toyota should not take it!

I love Apple for many reasons, but I also have a hard time with some of their ideology.

    Don't give in Toyota!

Its our devices, and if we want to modify them for our own use, so be it.

Does anyone read the stories before commenting on them anymore?

You didn't even need to click to read the full story.

Toyota had agreed to do so to "maintain their good relationship with Apple," our Velti contact told me on the phone.

Good for you Marvel2. How about a review after you use it. Tstreete did a great one but another perspective is always welcomed.

BTW do you use Navigon? Did you get the Live Traffic update? Love to hear how they each or both worked with the kit.

I'm going to use it for a few days and a couple trips around town first before I give a review. But my intial impressions of the kit is that it works just as advertised. Doesn't feel cheap, BT syncing is very easy and syncs every time I plug the phone in. Speaker volume is clear but may need to be louder. I still have to give it some time and adjust to my liking first (my car is pretty loud). And yes, I am using Navigon, but I have not yet downloaded their Live Traffice update.

The key for making this purchase for me is to have at least the option to allow the calls to come in through the car's speakers while using the built-in mic on the dock.

Also, the youtube video shows the guy had it stuck on his dash with the adhesive? Anyone have driver's point of view, pictures with it mounted with suction on the windshield? There's no way I'm sticking this thing to my dash.

Per the manual, calls will not come in through your car's speaker but instead the TomTom car kit's speaker.

I currently have the kit mounted on my windshield but I also tried mounting it on my dash. If you do not want to put that adhesive on your dash, buy a Sticky Pad ( and lay it on your dash. Now mount the TomTom kit as you normally would on the sticky pad as if it were glass. It sticks and works very well. Alternatively, you can put the adhesive disk on the sticky pad if you want the suction cup of the TomTom kit to cling to a hard plastic surface. When you leave your car, just peel the Sticky Pad off of your dash and it will not leave any residue. Essentially it is a GPS friction mount. Or you can buy this (, but its just too big for my tastes.

What is the name of the store that you got it from? I'm curious to know if I could find one in my area

Here is their website ( They are an authorized third party Mac reseller sort of like MacMall, but with a physical location. You can try calling other third party Mac resellers in your area if you don't have "The Mac Store" in your area.

one of my favorite phones back in the day were those small nokias which had one of the best menus I have tried. Currently I have the sony T616 which has a decent menu system but not great. I've tried the motorola ones and am not impressed at all which is why I stay away from the SLVR and RAZR. Hopefully the iphone or whatever it will be called will look great, have a great menu system, and play at least 1GB of songs --- thats just my wishlist

Since I have been using the app store more and more, I do not miss the cd method. However for an OS to do a clean install, you must have a disk/physical media. Linux distributions give you an ISO that you must mount or burn to disk.

I think Apple is doing it this way to cut down on the ability to make hackintoshes.

Here is what I think. Since the new IMacs have the ability for a SSD plus hard drive - I think in the future all macs will have it build into the bootup the option to hit the app store and download the OS without the need to have an OS already loaded. Would be nice if upgrades would backup and fresh install everything for you automatically since 90% of apps will be bought through the app store. Just click, wait an hour or more and come back to a fully usable system.

Maybe I'm out in right field with this suggestion, but how about a further separation between the black Macbook and the white, other than color?

Macbooks (white) - Yonah and integrated graphics (960?)
Macbook (black) - Merom and the new integrated graphics (965???)

That would certainly justify the black's higher cost and would give it more of a punch to be that PB 12" replacement.

This makes perfect sense as Apple has already dub the Black Macbook the "Top of the Line" yet there isn't really a difference between it and the Midrange so by adding The new processor and graphics chip Apple would essentially create the Top of the Line MacBook

...access to these events have become more restricted...

Is this another example of success breeding contempt and arrogance? I think so. If Apple were on the skids (like before the iPod saved their greasy bacon), they'd be begging for anyone to attend their apparently exclusive product showcases.

Grammar lesson: It should be, "...access to these events has become..."

This is quite ignorant on a number of levels:
    It's not ignorant at all.
    1. Trojans do exist for OSX,
Yes, a handful do, and they can be easily avoided with a reasonable dose of common sense.
although unless you're logged in as admin (and who routinely operates their Mac like that?
I do, as do many others. There is no problem running on an admin account, if you're even moderately aware of what you're doing.
the request to install should alert you to something wrong.
Exactly. See "common sense" remark above.
    2. Security through obscurity is no security at all, especially as OSX and iOS become more mainstream.
The market share myth is ridiculous and has no basis in fact. The fact is, OSX has a larger market than ever before, growing by over a million Macs every month, and the number of malware threats is at an all-time low, the number of viruses is now zero.
    3. If you send files to friends, relations, or business colleagues with a less fortunate computing experience it would be playing nice not to pass on nasties to them.
If they use even a tiny amount of the above-mentioned common sense, they already have anti-virus running on their computers. If not, they have a much larger exposure to malware from other sources than they do from a Mac user sending them a file. If someone stands in the middle of the freeway, my choosing to drive on a different road to avoid hitting them does nothing to ensure they're protected.
Talk to GGJStudios about point #3. He will rip your head off and call you unprofessional :D
No, he won't. He will, however, respectfully point out the fallacy of that argument.

O man, so many years of waiting for a new look of what was known as the AI PowerBook. Now they aren't releasing it yet, i cross my finger. PLEASE CHANGE THE LOOK ALREADY!!!   if not i'll just get an iMac :( :( :(

It's not the AI PowerBook, it's the Al PowerBook. Big A little l, as in the chemical symbol for Aluminium. It replaced the one we call the TiBook or Titanium PowerBook.

They may change the look, they may not. Doesn't make it a bad computer - it's a dead-set ripper of a computer. Why are you so worried about how it looks?

It's true...but I don't see it changing anytime soon. Americans are used to getting free or cheap phones when they sign up for a carrier contract. The carriers subsidize the cost so that expensive phones can be had for <$200. They RARELY pay full retail price ($300-$700) on a phone...mainly only when they break theirs and still have time on their contract. The way I understand it, the rest of the world pays full retail everytime they want a new phone. Is this right?

In Europe, it is pretty much the same as in the US, most people get their cell phone with a contract.

I'm not could be the next great product to be unveiled @ WWDC, but it seems a little soon and I just can't really see Apple making a phone. Sorry. While I'm sure if it is true, it'd be a cool phone, but it just seems like one of those rumours that comes up occasionally and then goes away, just like the Tablet Mac. On the other hand, the Marklar rumours were true, so I don't know. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

    Yeah tell me about it.

How much does it take to break a Verizon contract again...?

It's $175, and I think it'd be worth it. I never get more than maybe three bars, and let's just forget their international plans. I think I'm going to switch to T-Mobile in a few weeks. My Verizon phone was $1.50 a minute internationally and it didn't even work in Rome and my aunt's T-Mobile phone I borrowed for my trip to Singapore was $0.99/min. and worked so well.

just out of curiosity, what type of work?

Lots of places require antivirus software installed to access their internet. I'm at uni and no mac or pc will get internet access unless they pass a test with valid and up to date antivirus. I think it's a good thing, even for mac users, as it limits the amount of viruses that are passed on.

We get McAfee on a uni license, but this might make me consider Sophos instead if it's lighter on system resources (the only thing I don't like about antivirus software...)

The company that really deserves criticism is intuit. They recently released quicken 2007 and it was not UB. They were releasing a new product and they chose to ignore intel Mac users. Makes you wonder if they are going to stay in the mac market at all. Maybe in the future they will just recommend running parallel and windows, to use quicken on an intel mac. That version of Quicken doesn't run fast enough in Rosetta? Seems like it would.

Too late for that: Guacamole. But I'm not worried. It doesn't know my favorite pizza. Yet.

And in my case - not much fuel for password hackers to know my challenge question answers, but the fact is that more and more info about us can be reverse engineered from our digital "tracks" to build up quite a picture.

Speaking of pictures, I was just hearing that it's possible to gather other bits, e.g., from EXIF data on Flickr, Picasa, etc., including user annotations, avatar names from forums, etc. Also mentioned was a technique of "surrounding" your IP address from the servers it interacts with over time to pin its location down. And there are a growing number of other sources - e.g., facebook (besides what most of us make public there, just start some stupid app that requires "access to your basic information" and give the app away for the info) and other social and dating sites.

The "net" result (so to speak) is that little to none of the data may compromise you on its own - but when assembled could be quite a portfolio of info about you (and your associations and patterns of associations) that could be used to hack your ID, track you and more.

Not to mention if you live in any major city and go to stores, public buildings, etc., you're being photographed many, many times per day. (In London, up to thousands of times per day, e.g.)

But for all the arguing in the larger media and here, the simple question of why THIS file exists, and what its real intended use is hasn't yet been directly addressed by nearly anyone, especially anyone in a position to actually know.

It's not there for no reason and didn't program itself to exist. That doesn't pass any Occam's Razor or smell test. So what the hell IS the story with it??

Users are already moving away from the Mac versions. When Intuit announced they were here to stay in 2003 there was a lot of criticism about how they left Mac users stranded for six years. Look who is abandoning who now. If they were to close up Mac development, few would care. I'm betting they will be just one of many companies to do it too.

finally someone reasonable! so many of you flippin fools don't realize what WWDC stands for...

    World wide DEVELOPER'S conference!

this is about professional stuff. in they launched the powermac g5, because developers could then write 64-bit apps. in they discussed tiger (and i think launched new pro displays) so that users could write stuff using core image and all the cool new tiger features. in they announced the transition to intel, because devs could now write stuff for the intel platform (and i don't think they really announced anything else AFAICR...). so in they are going to talk about leopard and how it relates to developers, and maybe release PROFESSIONAL products, like a mac pro or xserve.

you have got to be CRAZY to think that he's going to intro an ipod at WWDC, when MW Paris is right around the corner! MW Paris in september is pretty much ALWAYS when they intro ipods and consumer products this time of year.

edit: last year, they had a special media event around october to intro the imac g5 with isight and video ipod and did not have anything at MW Paris. this will probably be the same this year.
I agree with you on some of these points... however, the release of a new or majorly updated consumer device, would (in most cases) create a new development platform. And that is what this conference is for.

(I'm not predicting any of that stuff, I'm just playing devil's advocate)

    Apr 20, 08:22 AM
to really stay ahead of the market Apple will need to:

    add a 4" screen
    keep the same form factor
add the dual core A5 processor
update the GPU to something similar (but most likely not as powerful) as in the iPad 2

The GPU is integrated into the A5 processor, anything the A5 goes into will get the iPad 2 GPU as well - means serious graphics power into the iPhone 5 and Apple TV as they are updated with the A5.

There are claims by some analysts that Amazon is going to kick the crap out of Apple's Maiden, N.C. data center and Netflix in one quick shot with their own cloud service.

Yea, Amazon is in a WAY better position technology wise, and track record wise with this kind of service. I guess we'll have to wait and see what Apple has up there sleeve.
